[GAY LIBERATION FRONT]

Flier for San Francisco's first Pride parade.
Double-sided photocopied flyer. 280x220 mm; 11x8 1/2 inches. Folds, minimal wear. [San Francisco, June 1970]

This flier promotes the "Christopher Street Liberation Day Gay-In," a one-year anniversary commemoration of New York's Stonewall Rebellion held at Golden Gate Park. Large events were held the same day in New York and Hollywood. This San Francisco event was held with no official sanction, and the organizers had reason to fear police violence and mass arrests. The event has been held annually since and is now known as San Francisco Pride.
This boldly illustrated flier includes slogan such as "Freakin Fag Revolution," "San Francisco, Love It or Leave It,' and "Stonewall Riots? Far Fuckin Out." The organizing body is here described as the "Gay Celebration Front," rather than the Gay Liberation Front. On verso is a news story about police harassment of "crimes without victims" at Golden Gate Park, with a caricature of the "park pigs" drawn by underground cartoonist Harry Driggs (signed with his pseudonym R. Diggs). None others traced at auction or in OCLC.
